A VHF antenna is required to receive AIS data. In our video you can see how to fit an AIS transponder with a VHF antenna.
To avoid needing a second antenna on board, you can use an antenna splitter and use your radio's antenna for AIS reception. AIS transponders with integrated splitter are also available. See how these are installed on board in our video.
