Q: What is the difference between a depth sounder and a fish finder?

FIshfinders and depth sounders work in exactly the same way. Both transmit sounder pulses that bounce off obstacles in the water such as rocks, fish or the bottom and back to the boat. These are then displayed on a screen using special software. Sound wave technology is used in shipping and sailing to navigate and avoid grounding. However, because it can also be used to detect fish, manufacturers have specialised in producing fishfinders that transmit pulses with a higher-frequency narrow beam, allowing the fishfinder to detect smaller targets but at a reduced depth.
