Custom splicing

Splicing and rigging - a craft steeped in tradition

A professionally finished splice is more resistant to breakage than any knot. Even today in the modern world, this special craft cannot be replaced by modern technology.
Splicing is the term used to describe the unbreakable and lasting bond and repair of fibre and wire ropes by the intertwining of the individual strands.
SVB works exclusively with certified splicers to finish your halyards, sheets and mooring lines. All splicing work is masterfully crafted, neatly sewn and the ends welded and whipped. This permanent connection not only maximises the breaking load of your rope, the durability of a splice connection is based on friction and the phenomenon of self-locking and is always higher than the strength of the original rope. The rigger knows different types of splices: eye splice, long splice, short splice, back splice (end splice), rope connection splice and wire-rope splice.

Advantages of splices vs. knots - What makes a real high-performance rope?

However, an incorrect splice or knot can reduce the tensile strength of a rope by up to 75%. A line that has been spliced can easily hold double the load than one which has simply been tied in a knot.
Many yachts have oversized lines within their rigging, which are expensive and unnecessary. Professional sailors and regatta participants are well aware of the advantages of spliced lines and use them to cut down on weight and save money. Another decisive advantage: halyards, sheets and mooring lines can run through the rigging, cleats and fittings without resistance.
A professionally finished splice is more resistant to breakage than any knot and creates a permanent, smooth connection between two rope ends by interlacing the carding elements. This permanent connection not only maximises the breaking load of your rope, but also significantly extends its service life.

Example of the strength of a rope with a splice vs. with a knot

Info: Here is a brief explanation of the strength of a splice compared to a knot, supplemented by an exemplary comparison diagram.

Rope connections Residual breaking load Strength level
Unspliced line 100 % Full, original strength of the rope.
Splice 80 - 95 % A professional splice retains almost the entire breaking load of the line.
Double sheet stay approx. 55 - 65 % A secure, but strength-weakening knot.
Bowline approx. 50 - 60 % A bowline knot is a slightly stronger knot, but is weakens the strenght of the rope slightly more.
Figure eight knot approx. 45 - 55 % This knot almost halves the strength of the rope.

This comparison of the breaking load illustrates that a splice maintains the strength of the rope considerably better than a knot. When it comes to the strength of ropes, the type of connection is always decisive. Our SVB team will be happy to advise you on choosing the right connection.
A knot considerably weakens the rope at the knotted point due to localised compression and a lot of friction. A splice, on the other hand, connects the fibres by carefully interweaving the individual strands. This connection distributes the tensile forces evenly over a greater length of the rope. This means that the original strength of the line is almost completely retained, as there are no weak points.
