Facts worth knowing about standing rigging and running rigging
Wire ropes are an integral part of a sailing boat. They take on tasks where conventional ropes would simply reach their limits. They can be thought of as the “steel skeleton” of a vessel.
To do this, you need properly manufactured, custom-made stainless steel on board:
1. Standing rigging: stability of the mast, correct shroud tension
2. Lifelines: safety on deck
3. Running rigging & steering lines: halyards, steering lines for the rudder system
In harbours around the world, we see a wide variety of rigging setups. Our technicians are often amazed that some of them are still standing at all: shrouds that are far too loose, masts leaning forward or bent to the side are a common sight. But it doesn’t have to be that way. For truly stable rigs, SVB offers expert technical advice from our technicians, our wire rope configurator, and a comprehensive range of products.
When do I need to replace wire rope on board?
When did you last inspect your rig?
Because pre-assembled wire ropes below deck often deteriorate unnoticed, regular and thorough inspections are crucial to prevent mast failure or material damage.
Visible damage is an immediate warning sign. We recommend inspecting the rig thoroughly at least once a year for wire breaks (commonly known as strand breaks or “meat hooks”). As soon as you discover the first cracks, its structural integrity is no longer guaranteed and replacement is imperative.
When to replace wires depends largely on how and where they are used. Insurers often recommend replacement after 10 years, although some experts advise waiting until at least 15 years or 25,000 nautical miles before changing.
Even if an old wire rope appears to be intact, it can conceal hidden dangers in its material structure. Over the years, stainless steel loses its elasticity. As a result, the rope can no longer cushion gusts or the hard impact of waves. These shock load peaks are transferred directly to the fittings, which can lead to sudden material failure.
Our tip: Considering how much damage a mast breakage could cause, the cost of a new wire rope assembly is low. Invest in your safety in good time.
