Good tarpaulin, with a few tricks lasts longer than just one season

Field report after a winter season outdoors
Basically, the tarpaulin held up well through the winter. You should just make sure to avoid possible chafing marks on the stanchion heads. Even slightly protruding bolts or safety pins on the railing wires can lead to local fraying, at least during a storm in the open-air camp in northern Germany.
It is essential to ensure that as little wind as possible can get under the tarpaulin. Hitting the tarpaulin leads to jerky loads on the eyelets, which can then easily tear out.
