Can it replace an Delphi CAV 296?

Yes, I used both Delphi HDF296 and Hengst E75K on my Yanmar engine. Not the E76K which is longer than the HDF296.

The E75K is a physical replacement for the CAV296 type filters. However as a note of caution it is worth checking filter size recommended by the engine manufacture (often rather large such as 30 microns for marine diesels). Many CAV296 type filters are made for the automotive industry and aimed at petrol rather than diesel engines. These may be 5 micron filters or even less. These are likely to cause fuel starvation on a marine diesel. Hengst don’t seem to publish the filter size. That said I have used the E75K on my Yanmar without problems.
