Product details

High-quality PVC jib sock that provides reliable protection for your sail and at the same time makes your sailing experience easier thanks to it being easy to handle and care. The tightly-fitting material minimises the surface area exposed to the wind and prevents flapping, which is not only annoying but can also cause potential damage to the sail and rig. The material is waterproof and UV-resistant. It offers long-term protection, while a robust coil zip absorbs wind forces and protects the sail.

Why should the headsail be protected?

Most boaters keep the headsail up for the duration of the season. Like the mainsail, the headsail must also be carefully protected from UV radiation and other environmental influences in order to lengthen its lifespan.

A simple way to protect the sail is to use a furling jib sock after every voyage. If the cover is easy to fit, it can be done in no time at all.

Why use a jib cover?

A well-fitting furling jib cover with a smooth surface offers little surface for the wind to attack.. Make sure the line used to tighten the cover doesn't come loose when no-one is around. If the cover does come loose, the wind on the cover can cause it to flap, which is not only annoying for you and your neighbours on the jetty, but can also cause damage to the sail, the rig and cover itself.

The high-quality, coated Stamoid fabric is waterproof and extremely UV-resistant, which offers long-term protection for your sail. The material also has very little stretch. Once the furling jib cover is taut, this tension is maintained. Thanks to the smooth inside, the sail is not damaged by friction.

A high-quality coil zip is able to absorb the forces of the wind and lacing without any problems.

The furling jib cover is usually attached to the snap shackle of the spinnaker halyard. A D-ring is fitted at the upper end of the Diekow furling jib cover. This means that the metal of the snap shackle only comes into contact with the metal of the D-ring. This reduces wear, increases strength and ensures efficient transmission of energy to the cover.

Fitting the jib cover
Fitting the furling jib sock

When fitting a furling jib sock the design of the sock is important:

• The tapered gable end allows the cover to be easily fed over uneven surfaces.

• Zipper can be closed with little effort.

• Smooth inner side of the fabric glides over the furling headsail without friction.

A number of things are important when tightening the furling jib sock. Firstly, make sure the size of the cover is correct. Look to have a circumference 10-20 mm larger than the largest circumference at the clew. If the sleeve is too tight, it will require more effort to fit, while if it´s too loose, it will flap too much in the wind.

Micro blocks are used to direct the tightening line with minimal friction and in the most efficient way. Their positioning is also important. If they are too close together, the effect when tightening is minimal. Too far apart and the line will suffer increased friction, which can lead to increased effort and abrasion.

A lacing strip is integrated into the furling jib cover for cross lacing. This serves as an anchor for the micro-blocks and ensures the foresail cover can be very consistently tightened along its whole length, which means your sail is well-packed, with minimum contact surface for the wind.

The smooth structure of Stamoid also makes for easy lacing. On the inside of the cover, it prevents friction on the sail, while on the outside the lacing cord does not rub against the cover.

Tightening the jib sock
Storing the furling jib sock

The material is light and thin, allowing the cover to be stored away easily in lockers to save space. Do not roll the cover, but fold it like an accordion. To prevent mould, make sure it is dry before storing.

Care

The material is dirt and water repellent thanks to the Nanotop®3 anti-capillary treatment. If necessary, it can be easily cleaned with commercially available cleaning agents. Occasionally rubbing the spiral zip with stearin keeps it running smoothly and prolongs its life.

Will it resist?
I'm not convinced that type of material can withstand the changes in temperature, from the heat of summer to the cold of winter.
Could it crack?
We'll see after a couple of seasons.

Fits.
It worked the second time.

And I ordered 11.50m again and got 11.40m!!

Definitely order a longer one.

Unfortunately, the width isn't right either; the second one I ordered is 4cm narrower than the first, which could be problematic if the canvas is thick.

Overall, I'm happy with it as long as it holds up well in the long run, especially in wind and weather, and UV protection.

uncertain lifespan
We would have appreciated if the eyelets were made of stainless steel... As soon as it rains, they rust. I hope that this is only a superficial defect because these eyelets support the entire tension system. If they deteriorate too quickly, the cover risks quickly becoming unusable due to the inability to tighten it on the genoa.
