Not suitable as a drop shackle. Risk of bolt loss.
This halyard shackle unfortunately has one major flaw – the bolt can slip out.
This is especially problematic for those sailors who detach the main halyard and then lock it at the end of the boom, either to raise the boom because the kicker isn't pushing enough and is obstructing their view, or because the halyard would otherwise bang against the mast in port – much to everyone's amusement...
SVB unfortunately didn't make this clear in the description – because, for me, halyard shackles are precisely those that can be released without having to worry in rough seas that the bolt might slip out of your hand and fall overboard.
Therefore, I cannot recommend this product.
The shackle is spliced into the halyard, and the halyard is secured in the mast. Now I'm just waiting to see when I can replace the bolt for the first time this season... SVB checked – thank you for that – but there's no solution – I chose the wrong shackle.
I hope this doesn't happen to you!
