Thank you very much for your reply. This one lasted 15 years. I already knew about the trick of using a screwdriver between the solenoid and the starter motor to get it started, but I’d rather not have to use it. I’ll buy a new unit and see if it lasts at least another 15 years.

My engine's MDI is showing a false open-circuit error. Although it doesn't prevent me from sailing, the authorized Volvo Penta service center in my area tells me that this is a known issue, that it indicates the beginning of deterioration, and that it may continue to function with this problem for a couple of years until it fails completely. They recommend that I not replace it just yet, because they say the MDI costs €800, plus labor. I’ve found sellers of this original part online, and it costs between €300 and €400, so I’m considering replacing it myself, since it’s an electronic component that just requires disconnecting the old one and connecting the new one. Besides noting the engine’s hour count—which apparently gets lost when the control unit is replaced—are there any other special precautions I need to take?
