Anchoring vs. mooring my boat

- When is it recommended to drop anchor and when should I moor my boat in the harbour? -

What are the advantages of mooring in the harbour?

Mooring in the harbour can be stressful for most sailors. The combination of difficult manoeuvring in the harbour, together with a number of people watching, issuing well-intended advice is enough to raise anyone's blood pressure. Nonetheless, there are some advantages to mooring in the harbour, for example, there's no need to watch anchor and the crew can sleep through the night without being disturbed. In heavy seas or storms, the stress of mooring in a safe harbour can pay off, so you should carefully assess the advantages and disadvantages of each situation and make a balanced decision. After all, no two boats are the same and no two harbours are identical. Being well prepared for your mooring manoeuvre is therefore essential. Mooring lines must be set in the correct position, fenders in place. The crew must be given clear instructions. But never fear, so far everyone somehow manages to get their boat in the box. Anchors

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the harbour, there is always the option of anchoring. But even here there is a lot to consider. Which anchor do I choose? What is the type of bottom that I would like to anchor to? Is my anchor chain long enough? How do I position my boat correctly and get my anchor back on board? Advantages & disadvantages of anchoring

Some of the advantages of anchoring are obvious. First of all, there are no 'backseat driver' issues and even if your third anchoring attempt is unsuccessful, there's nothing to stop you trying a fourth time. There is plenty of room to manoeuvre. This is relevant not only for coming in, but also for going out. Anchoring also saves having to pay marina fees and, above all, you and your crew can enjoy the solitude and nature, which is one of the reasons why many sailors go on a boat in the first place. Nevertheless, anchoring is often a cause of anxiety and restless nights, which is a shame because with the right equipment and a little practice, sailors often have an unforgettable experience.
