Instead of being inflatable like some life jackets, buoyancy aids are usually foam PFDs or foam life jackets (also know as flotation aids). Often used in dinghy sailing or inshore, the main purpose of this type of PFD is to give the person overboard enough buoyancy to swim ashore. In racing, special racing life jackets are often used which, although not unconscious-safe, do not restrict movement. It is assumed that assistance is relatively quick at hand in dinghy races, or that the person who has fallen overboard can make it back to the boat alone without too much trouble.
