Radar Reflectors for Boats

Many sport boats are largely made of plastic or wood so the surface area required to generate a sufficient radar signal is usually lacking. This is where a radar reflector helps. Thanks to their numerous rectangular aluminium panels, a highly reflective surface is created to echo the radar signal to the surrounding area. This provides increased safety, especially in bad weather with low visibility or fog.

Radar Reflectors

- Effective radar signals in any weather -

For a radar reflector to be as effective as possible, two things should be considered when mounting:

1. Install the radar reflector high up

On a sailing yacht, mount on the mast top or the uppermost spreader. This ensures that the ship still reflects a sufficient radar echo even if the hull or rig is below the radar horizon.

2. Fix the radar reflector securely

Mount the radar as securely as possible so that it cannot slip or twist. This avoids non-steady echoes, which can occur when mounted in an overhung position on halyards or the backstay. Non-steady echoes appear and disappear alternately on a radar receiver screen. However, raster scan systems may suppress such signals so that they are not detected with your ship.
