Water Sports Sunglasses

Sports sunglasses for sailing, motorboating, surfing, swimming or just relaxing. Being subjected to splashes and salt water, extreme reflections and constantly changing lighting conditions, eyewear for water sports enthusiasts and sunglasses used for activities on the water must be able to meet challenging conditions in order to ensure good, long term visibility.

A must-have item on the water. Either in spring, summer or autumn, the right sunglasses help not only protect your eyes from the sun, they also help you see things on board better and on the water.

Water sport sunglasses

- Polarised lenses for clear vision on the water -

Whether you are a sailor or a kite boarder: All sunglasses must provide reliable 100% protection against dangerous UV-A & UV-B rays. This can be identified by the CE mark, which is usually printed on one of the inner arms of the glasses. Polarised lenses are highly recommended for glare-free vision. In addition, the lenses and frame should be as break-proof as possible, able to withstand heavy loads and should not shatter if dropped.

Tinted lenses - which kind?

Grey, green or brown-tinted lenses are recommended for most water sports. Grey distorts the surrounding colours the least and brown intensifies the contrasts while giving a pleasant colour rendition. Blue-tinted glasses are not recommended for fast water sports, as the blue lens tint causes the wearer to notice movements in the peripheral much later, which can lead to slower reactions.

Which sunglasses are suitable for sailors and motorboaters?

Sports glasses with polarised lenses are recommended. They provide glare-free vision, which is particularly important when the sun is low and there is strong reflection from the surface of the water, as even a brief moment of blurred vision is all it takes to miss swimmers, kite boarders or surfers. In addition, polarising lenses allow you to see further down. Reflections from the water surface are filtered and obstacles under the water become clearly visible. Occasionally, sunglasses may end up in the water by accident. This is why floating frames are available which ensure that the glasses never sink below the water surface. Another useful addition is a floatable strap in as striking a colour (neon) as possible.

Which sunglasses are suitable for anglers?

Grey or grey-brown tinted lenses are recommended. These colours provide a neutral and pleasant vision and enhance the contrasts of the green surroundings. Polarised lenses are also useful for anglers as they make the water surface "transparent": Reflections from the water surface are filtered and fish below the water surface become visible.
