NASA MARINE Through-hull Sleeve For Electromagnetic EML Speed Transducer

Product details

With the NASAMARINE EML-3 set, consisting of a control box and electro-magnetic transducer, you can convert existing classic NASA Log systems such as Target2 Log, Clipper Log, Clipper Duet and Stingray Log to a pulse output.

Mount the control box in a dry place below deck and replace your existing paddle wheel unit with the new electro-magnetic transducer. Thanks to electro-magnetic technology, the new transducer has no moving parts, making problems caused by dirty paddle wheel units a thing of the past.

Technical information

The control box converts the sensor signal to a pulse output and can therefore be connected to any Clipper, Clipper Duet, Target2 or Stingray displays.
Speed range 0.2 – 40 Knots
Transducer outer diameter 50 mm
Cable length 5.0 metres
Calibration of the measured speed is possible directly on the control box
The electro-magnetic transducer is a low profile unit. A 50mm OD skin fitting is included and will need to be fitted in place of your current fitting.

NOTE: This electro-magnetic log transducer is only suitable for GRP hulls.

Also works fine in an Aluminum hull

In spite of the guidance that it only works in a GRP hull, we installed it in our Aluminum hull and it turns out to work fine. Of course when there is fouling the speed reads a little slower (more so than the SOG), but this is a good reminder to dive and clean the hull, and unlike those stupid paddlewheels a stiff brush is all you need for it to read cleanly again!

good thing

While not completely resistant to fouling, it's significantly better than the usual dials.

A disadvantage is that the system displays noticeably different speeds when the water flow isn't straight. On the starboard tack, my boat is half a knot "faster" than on the port tack (at the same GPS speed). I suspect this is because the water flows differently around the sensor in each direction.
