Almost all Yachts, motor boats and caravans have similar problems with their alternator: The built-in alternator regulators are only suitable for charging a small starter battery. Standard regulators have not been built to fully charge large battery banks.
How does the Sterling alternator regulator work?
High quality battery-controlled alternators like those produced by Sterling are far more effective than conventional built-in regulators as they do not measure the voltage directly at the output of the alternator. STERLING regulators use the "maximum current" charging method (IUoU / 4 steps) and this is how considerably lower charging times and also a lot shorter motor runtimes are achieved. Furthermore, the regulator outweighs any possible voltage losses due to cable lengths, connectors and isolation diode. Moreover it is totally waterproof.
In what way will the regulator help me as a yacht owner?
You have probably already been in this situation: You connected a, e.g. 55 Amp alternator to your engine, but your ampere meter only shows a charging current of 10 - 20 Amps.
Using this Sterling regulator you are not going to recognize your alternator: Firstly, it really achieves the promised output of your alternator. Very handy is also that you have to remove the built-in regulator, it is still going to be used as emergency-regulator.
