The CORTEX V1 VHF marine radio features an AIS-SOTDMA Class B transponder and innovative handset. With various features, including a screen for displaying AIS data and vessel instruments, managing and monitoring alarms and configuring remote vessel monitoring. The large, 4" touchscreen was engineered to withstand the rigours of the harsh marine environment and can be used with gloves and when wet. Furthermore, it is possible to connect additional devices (e.g. a secondary radio) via the NMEA2000 network. A 10 Hz GPS antenna precisely and reliably determines the current position of your vessel. Note: Before you can programme in the MMSI and possibly the ATIS identifier, the device requires a complete GPS fix, otherwise the entry is blocked for input. An error message appears:
... "MMSI and ATIS....must be programmed by an Authorised Garmin Representive"...
SOTDMA technology
The radio features the latest AIS technology and has an output power of 5W. SOTDMA technology gives you greater range and transmits your position more frequently than classic AIS technologies.
Including control panel
The H1 handset, which is included in the delivery contents has a large 4" touchscreen display. It was specially developed to withstand the rigours of the harsh marine environment and can be used with gloves and when wet, and innovative buttons make operation child's play. On top of numerous shortcut keys, for example for Channel 16 or DSC call, single hand operation is also possible using the click wheel and dedicated buttons. With microphone and speaker for radio communication. The handset must be connected to a power source and communicates with the radio via WiFi.
Integrated splitter
The built-in antenna splitter allows VHF and AIS signals to be received with only a single antenna, so no further antennas must be installed or compromises made in terms of signal strength. A built-in amplifier additionally improves reception and range.
10 Hz GPS antenna
The Cortex V1 has a high-precision 10 Hz GPS antenna that reliably and accurately determines your current position. Wenn das Funkgerät an das NMEA2000-Netzwerk angeschlossen ist, wird das Signal zusätzlich an alle anderen Komponenten weitergeleitet.
WiFi function
Thanks to WiFi, you can receive notifications on your smartphone, tablet or smartwatch anywhere on board. Up to ten WiFi devices can be connected to receive and manage alarms or display AIS information and instrument data. Furthermore, the Cortex Onboard App notifies you when a software update is available. The update can be done manually or automatically.
Collision avoidance
The device continuously calculates collision risk and warns with alerts. View crossing situations and take critical action. High-risk vessels are highlighted on the display and the alert sounds automatically.
Man Overboard (MOB)
When an AIS MOB situation is detected, the system immediately sounds the alarm. You can track where the signal was first activated and how the location changes. In addition, your own AIS MOB devices can be configured with a user name for easy identification. Pressing the MOB button displays a tracker on all connected devices.
Anchor monitoring
By combining position and heading, Cortex V1 checks that the boat is still exactly where it was anchored. If your anchor drags and your boat moves outside your anchor swing radius an alarm will also sound on all connected devices.

Manufacturer support is disappointing, subscription costs are high.
I thought the SVB user manual from 2021 was outdated and looked for the latest version on Garmin's website. But...
1. Here too, there's only an installation guide from 2021, not a general user manual. When you click on chat, the message "Not available for this device, please call, we will then forward you" appears. In my opinion, this is critical. Apparently, there are no software updates whatsoever. See https://support.garmin.com/de-DE?productID902860&tab/software. This effectively means that the initial software has not been and will not be further developed or optimized.
2. High subscription costs. The Product Overview brochure at https://static.garmin.compumac/Product-Overview_Cortex_1.3_GLOBAL.pdf mentions €20 per month and €120 per year. On https://support.garmin.comen-US?faqDcJ01Mk75I8MHXkanpSQn5 it says the Cortex Monitor subscription costs $20 per month or $160 per year! On https://www.garmin.comde-DEp916577 it says $30 per month and $240 per year. Aside from the price confusion, it's definitely steep for the rather limited functionality (the device itself plus a maximum of 5 sensors).
Sorry Garmin, theoretically a cool product, but it's going back unopened. Sorry for SVB, it's not your fault.
