Start into the new dimension of navigation
Dear all,

When someone like me, who has been on the water for over 50 years, is suddenly confronted with high technology in terms of electronics, it is like entering a new era.

Long story short, the device being reviewed here has exceeded my wildest expectations. It is as simple to operate as an iPad and the menu navigation is also child's play. The respective submenus reveal a variety of options that are unparalleled.

It is a shame that Raymarine does not offer an upgrade frame from the C120W to the Axiom 12. So I built the frame myself out of stainless steel. See picture.

Everything worked straight away and delivered the best results. I would not order the map I ordered from another source (Lighthouse from Raymarine) again, even though it is integrated into the system and is updated with software updates, I prefer the Navionics setting because the maps are more precise and have more information, especially regarding buoys and depth information.

Otherwise, the season
and the first trips can come.

Best wishes
Jürgen Albert

great
A really great device. Good resolution. Easy to use. It's hardly better.
Unfortunately very hard to get!

Very poor GPS performance
I received the 12-inch device at the beginning of February 2024 as a result of a campaign by the manufacturer with a (heavy) additional payment in exchange for an old device that could no longer be repaired and for which there was no longer any (old) replacement.

The software version is 4.1.75 (as delivered), there are no other devices nearby in the current setup and no software update has been deliberately made yet, although there are several in the pipeline.

After installation and commissioning, for me as an IT professional it is one of many examples that “newer” and “faster” does not automatically mean “better”. The processors are technically a lot faster than those in old devices. However, they are typically stuffed or burdened with more and more “features” that, with the exception of advertising professionals, only a few people actually need in practice.

On paper, the new processors are actually orders of magnitude faster, but system startup has slowed down significantly compared to my old a-series device!!

The performance of the GPS feels more than borderline. Every old and outdated cell phone with an app, even my (stone) old Garmin handheld device, can get a solid 3D fix in the physical cover within a few seconds, while the device discussed here takes hours in exactly the same place It "organizes" until it finally reports a fix. All of this was probably noticed after the initial initial setup of the GPS at the respective location, which always takes a little longer due to the system.

It is also unfortunate that the NMEA0183 port fell victim to the red pen. A rogue if you think anything bad about it, the dear Skip now has to adapt the remaining hardware (STng was also "brand new" recently) to the (now) new system with NMEA2000 on a regular basis.

The operation of the menus has only changed in details. In this respect, the device does what one would expect from it. There are three stars for that.

The screen is pleasantly bright and can be easily adjusted to the ambient light.
The display of the Navionics and c-Map maps is good as usual. Unfortunately not compatible with NV cards
The screen resolution is clear and good.
