The compass I received has play that can't be eliminated by tightening the adjustment screw (then it would no longer be adjustable smoothly). On the SSS practice card (1325,000), the resulting error is 0.3. This is the maximum error in position determination accepted by the SSSSHS examination board.
It may not matter in practice, but it always feels like you'd rather re-measure.
