Owner's Club Volvo Penta MD5
Repair or Replacement Engine for Penta MD5a
Hello, fellow sailors, I'm currently trying to decide whether to have a replacement engine installed on my Delanta 75 or to try to have the engine (Volvo Penta MD5a) repaired. Last year, during an inspection, it was discovered that the manifold, the seawater pump, and the mounting feet supporting the engine are damaged—or, in some cases, partially torn off. Next week, the boat will be transported for a full yacht service, where the engine will first be removed and thoroughly inspected. I’ve already had several experts on board who know their way around engines. Some say to just throw it out, while others believe it can be repaired and will be fine. Last season, the engine never let me down and ran flawlessly. So far, since I’ve owned the boat (for 3 years), a fuel pump, a diesel filter, and an impeller have been replaced. In the winter, the engine was flushed with antifreeze. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this engine and learn about your experiences—whether it’s worth keeping it or switching to something more modern (e.g., a Solé Mini 11 or 17), which would be a huge investment. On top of that, there’s the control panel and maybe a new fuel tank. The engine compartment would also need to be modified, along with a few other things I can’t foresee right now. I’m estimating over €10,000 for a replacement engine. I want to keep sailing this boat for as long as possible. So the question of cost-effectiveness is irrelevant here. I didn’t take over the boat in good condition. But I’d like to keep it because I simply think the Delanta 75 is fantastic. Especially as a solo sailor. I’ve already put quite a bit into it, and now I have the opportunity to get the boat completely back in shape with the help of a yacht service. It’s really hard these days to find professionals who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get to work. I’d love to hear about your experiences, Christian

Top quality
You can never have too many of these on board, and they make furling the sail incredibly easy. They've lasted for years and haven't stretched out at all.
