What does IP mean for lights?

IP stands for International Protection. The IP rating for marine lights provides information about protection against water penetration.

What IP water protection classes are there?

The SVB electrical specialists have compiled a list of water protection classes for you below. The 'X' stands as the placeholder for the information concerning the unit's protectability against the penetration of foreign bodies. Here, the numbers from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust-tight) are possible in practice.

IP X0 = No protection
IP X1 = Protection against dripping water
IP X2 = Protection against dripping water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15°
IP X3 = Protection against falling spray water up to 60° from the vertical
IP X4 = Protection against splashing water
IP X5 = Protection against water jets (nozzle) from any angle
IP X6 = Protection against powerful water jets
IP X7 = Protection against temporary submersion
IP X8 = Protection against prolonged submersion
IP X9 = Protection against water during high pressure / steam jet cleaning

An example: The level of protection for the Hella Marine Deck spotlight is waterproof to IPX7 - this means that it is resistant to anything from strong water jets up to temporary submersion.
