Why are starboard lights green?

Starboard lights are green to show heading and position to other vessels. The colour has been standardised internationally and serves to ensure the safety of all vessels on the water. To signal to other vessels which side your boat is on, the starboard light (green) is different from the port light (red). The internationally uniform colour system thus serves to provide better orientation and to prevent accidents.
