Best handheld VHF A very nice update of the previous model (HX870), especially with the updated firmware that now includes the DSC Position request call. Also likes the new display format.

With DSC and display of position with MMSI!! Robust, waterproof quality with charging cradle for the supplied rechargeable battery and alternatively a mounting block for AA batteries.

I am impressed by the many interesting technical possibilities After I got to grips with the German Engl. Manual and have used, tried and tested the handheld radio HX890E, I am very impressed by how many possibilities this device not only offers for radio, but also for navigation! The GPS receiver works precisely (if you should sit in a life raft with it, you can also give your exact position). COG, SOG and ALT are also displayed! Countless waypoints can be saved and controlled! With it you can navigate completely in an emergency! The radio transmission is clear, as is the reception. Important for use in the inland area in the HX890E you can save the ATIS number (and the DSC number for the sea) yourself! The buttons are easy to use. and changing settings (such as squelch strength) is very easy. It gave me a lot of pleasure to get to know the many possibilities that I cannot list here. The HX890E is not a slim device, but it still sits comfortably in the hand and has its place on the navigation table.

Top handheld device I really like the device. It is very robustly built and of high quality. So far I have only drained the battery within a day, even when using it at regattas (race management). Setting up the MMSI and ATIS with the up and down buttons is a bit fiddly and time-consuming, but only once. You have to read up on certain operations in the manual - I would deduct a point here - but after a short time getting used to how it works, it becomes automatic.

Handy - Valuable - Good

It fits well in the hand and is of high quality. The menu controls are logical and intuitive for me. Everything was easy to set up. The device will be used primarily in the cockpit, so I don't always have to go below deck to use the radio. It makes calling the marineros easier and ensures safe travel in the marina. The performance is perfect for this. It is also used for trips in the dinghy to keep in touch with the mother ship. No worries, as it floats and is waterproof.

Handheld VHF with DSC

This is an outstanding feature packed backup to my fixed VHF.
The ability to connect a fist mike and DSC makes this a fantastic safety addition on my boat.

I have recommended this radio to others - I may even swap my fixed Lowrance VHF for a Standard Horizon VHF.
