Discover HEMPEL's latest innovation and technological excellence
SILIC ONE, a biocide-free product based on silicone and hydrogel, gives the surface water-like properties. This means that organisms that cause fouling can no longer settle as easily on the hull and will quickly drop off as soon as the boat is in motion. It is suitable for both fast motor boats as well as sailboats.
Other impressive benefits also include the ease with which any fouling can be removed and with which the coating may be reapplied. This leads to long-term cost savings.
- Can be used on all surfaces, except wood.
- Creates a non-stick surface
- Biocide-Free
- Copper-free
What is hydrogel?
Hydrogel is based on unique, non-reactive polymers, that are added to the paint and form an invisible protective layer between the hull surface and the water. Vegetation forming organisms perceive the hull as a liquid and therefore are a lot less likely to stick to it.

Easy switching from biocide-containing antifouling to SILIC ONE
here's how:
Existing coating
If you want to switch to the biocide-free SILIC ONE from HEMPEL, you don't have to go to the trouble of removing your existing underwater coating. With the help of the
2-K Conversion Primer, it is easy to switch from conventional antifouling to advanced biocide-free fouling protection.
If the existing antifouling is still in good condition with good adhesion, the primer can simply be applied with a brush or roller. Stir the base, add the hardener and mix well (ratio 3:1). One full and undiluted coat is sufficient to achieve excellent adhesion. It is then recommended to apply a coat of
TIECOAT. When applying SILIC ONE for the first time, two coats should be applied. For all following applications one layer is sufficient. The boat can be launched after 30 hours. Maximum downtime before taking to water is one month.
If adhesion is poor, please remove all flaking and brittle coating components. Sand them down with damp sandpaper. Rinse the whole thing thoroughly with fresh water and follow the instructions for ‘’new set up‘’.
New setup
To ensure optimum adhesion of the SILIC ONE, the hull's surface has to be primed first. Use
LIGHT PRIMER to do this. Then apply one coat of
TIECOAT. When applying SILIC ONE for the first time, two coats should be applied. For all following applications one layer is sufficient. After 24 hours, the boat can be launched. Maximum downtime before taking to water is one month.
Note!
Biocide-free antifouling is a green alternative to chemical antifouling. Unlike biocide-containing antifoulings, biocide-free antifouling does not kill marine organisms such as algae and mussels, but makes it more difficult for growth to adhere. Regular cleaning of the hull is necessary to ensure that biocide-free antifoulings can effectively prevent fouling to take hold. The use of biocide-free antifoulings is advisable in waters with low or medium fouling levels, for example in freshwater or cooler waters.
