Efficiency I have been using the SILIC One game since 2017 and I recommend it to anyone. I haven't redone my submarine since that time (a few touch-ups), which is why I painted my aluminum Flaps this year (2024). I have no doubt about the result.

Product details

Biocide-free propeller antifouling SILIC ONE is Hempel's latest innovation and delivers top technological performance. Made from a silicone and hydrogel base, SILIC ONE gives your surface water-like properties, reduces frictional resistance and protects your boat from fouling. Thanks to the hydrogel, microorganisms cannot settle. Self-cleaning even at low speed. The kit consists of 1x 375 ml SilicOne TieCoat, 1x 375 ml SilicOne in black and 1x 370 ml HEMPEL LIGHT PRIMER. Please note that the substrate (the propeller) must be free of any old paint/antifouling.

Note!
Biocide-free antifouling is a green alternative to chemical antifouling. Unlike biocide-containing antifoulings, biocide-free antifouling does not kill marine organisms such as algae and mussels, but makes it more difficult for growth to adhere. Regular cleaning of the hull is necessary to ensure that biocide-free antifoulings can effectively prevent fouling to take hold. The use of biocide-free antifoulings is advisable in waters with low or medium fouling levels, for example in freshwater or cooler waters.

It sails like a different boat - but the square meter calculation didn't work for me.

It's quite involved and expensive to do a complete rebuild including 5 coats of Hempel High Protect II, but the first 80nm trip was a real experience. My boat has never been so fast, even though I didn't even reach the reefing point!

I had already applied Silic One to the saildrive two years ago and was very happy with it regarding fouling – practically nothing, or it could be easily removed with a sponge. That's why I did the whole boat this time.

The quantity calculation based on square meters didn't work for me. While I had 15% too much Hempel High Protect, the Primer Light and the Tie Coat were a good match in terms of calculation. But the Silic One calculation based on square meters yielded 15% too little, so I had to buy more locally.

Another disadvantage is the issue of durability. If you use the material relatively quickly, everything is fine. However, if you buy it in the spring to use it the following spring, you should bear in mind that a maximum storage period of 18 months is not much if the material is already 6 months old or more upon delivery.

Good antifouling system - We are satisfied

A few small pockmarks are visible during the crane operation in the fall.

Easy to clean with a sponge and water (even the few pockmarks).

Every spring, we roll a can over the entire underwater hull (Maxi Mixer, 35 feet) to freshen up and cover small scratches from the crane straps.

Last season, we also treated the saildrive and propeller with the system. It held well on the saildrive. Unfortunately, some of the epoxy primer came off the propeller. We'll try it again this season.
