The idea of using the backstay for the radio and shortwave reception is not new. Unfortunately such an antenna has a relatively high impedance (alignment) of a few thousand ohms. Professional short and all wave receiver feature a 50 ohm antenna input. If you connect the "high impedance" backstay on a piece of wire to the antenna input of the short-wave receiver, you get a rough mismatch that manifests itself in low reception performance and increased noise. MLB Marine balun will provide the necessary adjustment over the entire frequency range of 100 kHz - 30 MHz and you will be surprised by the good reception quality.
