Could somebody please tell me what the little silver-coloured wire is for? The red and black are obvious, but does this “naked” wire have a function or should I just chop it off? Thanks!

Hi Claire, the blank (naked) cable is the shield/ing. You can connect it to a seperate grounding or if you don´t have it to the general grounding like battery minus.
