sMRT ALERT from MRT is an MOB (Man Overboard) personal locator beacon that transmits a distress alert and position update via AIS and VHF-DSC to provide the best possible chance of survival in the event of an MOB situation. It sends an alert to all VHF DSC radios within range and then updates via AIS to enable exact position tracking. It instills user confidence by including app-based status checks as well as audio and visible acknowledgements.
What is a Class M AIS distress beacon?
To protect the AIS system from overloads caused by false alarms, a new European regulation, ECC/DEC/(22)02 has been approved and is scheduled to be implemented from December 2024. Under this regulation, in countries that adopt the Class-M standard, AMRDs (autonomous maritime radio devices, such as AIS MOBs), will no longer be permitted to use AIS channels 1 and 2. Instead, they will be required to switch to channel 2006, which is not designated as an emergency channel.
