Everything you need to know about splicing

The splice addition in the image is intended for a splice with an eye of up to 40 cm. If a further splice is required, e.g. on the other end, the splice addition must also be taken into account.
Otherwise, in the case of a one-ended splice, the opposite end is always whipped. For an eye splice of more than 40 cm in length, an additional 50 cm must be added to the existing splice addition.
Note: The exact eye length is measured by pulling the eye lengthwise and measuring the distance from left to right (clear dimension).

What exactly is splicing anyway?
Splicing is the term used to describe the unbreakable and lasting bond and repair of fibre and wire ropes by the intertwining of the individual strands. When the rope is stressed, the splice contracts and the various strands become locked together by themselves.

Why is splicing still done by hand?
The reason for this is to ensure that the fibres are not damaged, punctured or cut through completely during splicing, as this considerably weakens the breaking load. Since machines do not yet exist that are error-free, humans are still better at making the splices themselves today.
You should also refrain from using simple knots to join rope, as the breaking load is reduced by up to 50%, whereas the rope only loses up to 10% of its breaking load (in relation to the linear breaking load) with a properly executed splice. We also recommend not to crimp ropes, as ropes stretch under load, become thinner and the connection can come loose unexpectedly.

Do it yourself

You can also do the splicing yourself. To do this, you need the right tools as well as the relevant know-how. We recommend our splice set with bag or alternatively the tools individually.

Important!

Please indicate the desired eye length at the end of the order in the "additional notes" field.
For a spliced eye an additional length of approx. 1 m of rope is required.

Eye splice on the mainsheet
Cleanly and appropriately spliced. The riggings are also professionally done. I wouldn't have expected that at this point! Great work.

I will be at my boat, in Sicily, in May and I need to order several item so they arrive at about the same time as I do. One item is a main sheet with a splice and I think I need to add extra time for making the splice but I don't know how much. If I order a main sheet with a splice, how much extra time should I allow for you to make the eye splice?

Hello, I would like to get an anchor "snubber" to reduce pressure on the anchor windlass - what equipment do I need to buy for a 15m sailboat (24 tonnes)? I cannot find what I need in the SVB catalog. The snubber should clip on to 10mm chain, and the line should be about 12 m long. Thank you.
