Product details

Explore the world on the water with the Torqeedo TRAVEL 1103

The Torqeedo TRAVEL 1103 CS features an input power of over 1100 watts and is comparable to a 3 HP petrol outboard engine in terms of propulsive power.
Thanks to the on-board computer with GPS-based calculation of the remaining range, a travel guide is always with you.

The new Travel 1103 C top model:
Powerful, efficient and quiet as a whisper

The new Travel 1103 C top model joins the internationally successful Travel line. It features a brand-new direct drive and powerful 915 Wh battery, which has 73 percent more capacity than the basic model, thus providing more range. In addition, the Travel 1103 C delivers 10% more power (1100 watts), a stronger aluminium pylon for increased protection against impact damage and improved transom mounting. Only the engine noise is reduced, it drops to a whisper-quiet 33 dB. Like the renowned Travel 1003 model, the new propulsion system is suitable for boats up to 1500 kg, the smaller Travel 503 for boats up to 750 kg. All Torqeedo Travel engines are equipped with a high-performance lithium-ion battery and an integrated on-board computer with GPS.

1: On- board computer with GPS-based range calculation: Alarm at low charge level
2: Emergency Stop Magnetic Chip: Stops the engine in an emergency without affecting the water resistance
3: Short shaft
4: High efficiency drive for superior performance and range
5: Lithium high performance battery integrated in the outboard engine: High energy density, excellent high current capability, safe
6: Charging socket and USB port: For charging with shore power, from 12V battery or solar. Via an (optional) USB adapter, the TRAVEL can also be used as a power source for smartphones, lights etc.
7: All connections and components are waterproof (IP 67)

Included in delivery: Torqeedo Travel 1103C with battery and charger
Note: For optimum protection in salt water, Torqeedo recommends the use of a zinc anode.

The TRAVEL 1103 - advantages

  • With its integrated lithium battery and superior efficiency, the TRAVEL is the alternative to a small petrol outboarder
  • It can do what a 3 HP petrol outboard can do, but is more eco-friendly, quieter, lighter and more comfortable
  • Completely waterproof (IP 67)
  • On-board computer with GPS-based calculation of the remaining range
  • Solar rechargeable - even while using
  • Can be easily disassembled for transport and space-saving storage, the outboard alone weighs only 11.3 kg
  • A clean thing: no matter how and where you store your Torqeedo TRAVEL - no risk of anything leaking, no smell of petrol

Information on range and speed

When travelling through water, displacement increases power required in proportion to the cube (third power) of the speed. This means that doubling water speed increases the power required eightfold. Conversely, it of course also means that only a slight reduction in speed will increase the range attainable significantly. Simply reducing speed by e.g. half a knot has a considerable effect on the remaining range. Since mental arithmetic to the power of three is quite tricky, the on-board computer of the Cruise constantly calculates the remaining range for you. To do this, it combines the consumption data from the motor with the charge level of the batteries together with the speed over water obtained via GPS. This means you can read the remaining range in real time from the Cruise's display. Using the TorqTrac App you can even read the remaining range from a map on your smartphone.

* Torqeedo static thrust data is based on measurements according to worldwide valid ISO guidelines. The static thrust values of fishing motors are typically measured differently and are therefore higher. In order to compare Torqeedo static thrusts with conventional fishing motors, approximately 50% can be added to the Torqeedo static thrusts.

Electric outboard motor with defects
Basically an innovative product. As expected, the motor is quiet, powerful enough for a dinghy with a crew of 6, and the range is more than sufficient. Where you have to make compromises is the robustness of this motor. The tiller is hollow inside to save weight, but this creates the possibility of injury and predetermined breaking points. The battery has two pointed 'noses' on both sides, which may be nice, but they also pose a risk of injury, with predetermined breaking points. So it depends very much on the area of use of the motor. Inflatable boat on Lake Ammersee, no wind, no swell, ideal. Sea, 20 knots of wind and swell are other conditions that unnecessarily challenge the predetermined breaking points and injury possibilities of this motor. Slight structural changes would make a big difference here, even the propeller is more on the windy side...

Not so much for salt water
After the first season, the aluminum above the waterline has corroded and the paint is partially peeling off.
Disappointing for the price. The plastic parts are very brittle and break easily. Otherwise it does what it's supposed to.

I definitely wouldn't buy it again.

Torqueedo is not convincing
First of all, the delivery etc. from SVB was, as always, quick and problem-free.

The electric motor (at least the one we got) doesn't come anywhere near the power stated by the manufacturer. Since there is a display that shows how much power is currently being used, it was nice and easy to test. At half power, 80% of the battery was used up after 2.4 nautical miles (dinghy 2.2 m, 110 kg payload, flat water, no wind), at full load it stopped after 1.3 nautical miles.
Manufacturer's specification 18 nautical miles at half load, 4.6 at full load.
I am aware that manufacturer's specifications on performance data are tested and stated under the most optimal conditions, but in this case, in my opinion, it is simply misleading and does not correspond to the statement in the product description.
It doesn't even come close to half the stated range! What about "exploring the world from the water", the immediate surroundings, nothing else.
On the other hand, the charging time is correspondingly long, in this case 13 hours from 20% remaining charge to full. That's no fun!!
Other negative aspects
- The display is difficult to read in sunlight
- There are no covers for the plug connections of the tiller and battery, so you have to be extremely careful that no salt water gets on the plugs when assembling or disassembling the components.
- The shaft discolors in salt water, even though it was cleaned and dried immediately after use..... Doesn't affect the function, but it's not pretty.
The only positive thing I can say is that the electric outboard is quieter and lighter than our old petrol engine, but that's not really a surprise.
There's still a lot of room for improvement in development here.

Electric dinghy engine
We use the engine as a dinghy drive. Unfortunately I am disappointed with a price of over 2500 €. Cheap plastic as a pin with small screw connectors for which there are not even protective caps, although it is written "protect from moisture". Cheap plastic for the accumulator. No protective cap for the cable from the motor to the battery. Unfortunately long battery charging times. Operation is easy.

Reliability IssuesPower
I've had this motor for 5 years and I'm rowing it almost all the time. The propeller fuse is fragile and the propeller separates easily. After a rupture of the fuse, the propeller must also be changed (weakened plastic) Battery sealing problem which requires its replacement. Control electronics problem preventing the engine from starting. The plastic ages badly and becomes brittle on the battery (mechanical connection problem battery-motor) The electrical connectors are fragile and difficult to connect. They also pose problems of bad contacts. For use on the high seas the engine lacks power. An expensive and unreliable product.
