Hello there! My partner and I are currently upgrading our battery/solarsystem on our boat. We have installed 3 lithium batteries (our house batteries), which are connected in parallel and so far only connected via negative wires with our starter liquid acid battery. The system works so far. Now we‘d like to expand the system, so that we can charge the lithium batteries by the starter battery and alternator. I understand, we do this by adding the DC-DC charger; this way we also prevent our alternator from damage. But now we‘d also like to charge our starter battery via our lithium batteries. Which means, we would use the solar energy to charge the starter battery via litium batteries. I read that this should be possible, however, whenever I look up the DC-DC charger, it is always explained the other way around (charging the lithium batteries by using the starter battery or alternator via charger). Could you help me understand if it is possible to use our house battery for charging the starter battery? Thank you in advance and best regards, Jess

Hi Jessica and partner, you placed your question about the reverse charging function here with the VICTRON Orion DC-DC chargers. These Orion devices do not offer a reverse charging function, so you would be forced to use 2 of them: One for the charging path from the lead-acid battery (alternator) to the lithium battery and the second for the charging path back from the li-battery to the lead-acid battery in the event of energy surplus on the lithium side. Perhaps you should take a closer look at the new STERLING Saturn B2B charger series. STERLING Saturn offer everything in one: adaptation of the charging parameters from lead-acid (alternator) to lithium, reverse charging function in the event of an energy surplus on the Li battery side and charging current limitation to protect the alternator from a possible thermal overload. Current limitation can be done by selection of the device (ampere rating) or using the optional BBR remote control (current limitation to 85 or 65%). You will find the STERLING-Saturn devices under our article numbers 33346 to 33350 and the BBR remote control under 33352. Unfortunately, the product description of these STERLING Saturn devices in our online shop has not yet been optimized.
