I use schooner for painting my dinghy, especially outdoors, and I'm very satisfied with it. It's highly resistant to UV radiation, has a very clean finish, and runs very smoothly, especially at temperatures above 6-8 degrees Celsius. It's excellent for horizontal surfaces.

It's always fun to work with; in my opinion, it's the best clear varnish you can buy. Easy to use and produces excellent results. The only minor drawback is that a skin forms on the surface of the remaining contents of opened cans (despite careful sealing)—so use it up as quickly as possible.

Product details

International SCHOONER is a high gloss, one component premium varnish. It is highly resistant to UV with no fading or yellowing. SCHOONER has excellent flow out characteristics for easier brush application. Coverage: 14 m²/litre. Thinner No.1.

Processing instructions:

For coated surfaces:
Degrease surface with Super Cleaner and sand with 280-320 grit, clean and allow to dry.

For uncoated surfaces:
  • Bare wood: Sand first with 80-180 grit then with 280 grit and remove dust. Then apply wood treatment and allow to dry.

Application: Thoroughly clean and degrease. Sand and rinse the substrate. Apply a total of 2-4 coats and sand with 320-400 grit after each coat.
For bare wood, apply the 1st coat of clear varnish diluted 10% with Thinner No. 1. Then apply 4-6 undiluted coats. After each coat, sand with 320-400 grit.

Drying time at 15° C: 2.5 hours
Processing time at 15° C: min. 14 hours
Processing temperature: +10 °C to max. 29° C

Good paint, but you need a lot of time.
It's good and expensive, but it takes an incredibly long time to build up the entire layer. At best, you can do one coat per day, then wait a day before the next one. Then sand it. And that's with a total of eight coats, only to then wait weeks for the layer to harden.

Very good paint but....
I've been using schooners for years. Unfortunately, this is no longer available in a small container (375ml). Once opened, the lacquer forms a covering skin very quickly. Storage for a longer period of time is almost impossible, resp. no one has been able to tell me a trick that actually works.
