Lithium batteries are becoming increasingly popular for use as appliance batteries on board due to their many advantages. This results in the need for a special charging management system to ensure simultaneous operation of lead-acid batteries as starter batteries and lithium batteries as consumer batteries. Alternators are pushed to the max when charging lithium batteries, as the low internal resistance of these batteries can lead to overheating and damage to the alternator, especially at low speeds.
The RCB+ coupling relay from CRISTEC provides a solution. The coupler is capable of limiting the current flowing from the alternator to the service battery while prioritising the charging of the starter battery. Using a rotary knob, the current that should flow to the service battery can be limited between 50 and 120 A, depending on the requirements of your system.
Important: Make sure that at least 30% of the alternator current is used to charge the starter battery.
The charging relay can be used in conjunction with 12 and 24 V alternators with a maximum current of 200 A. Additionally, the relay is equipped with overvoltage and reverse current protection to safeguard the alternator. Due to its compact housing and passive cooling without a fan, the device can be installed flexibly.
