Recharging function
The bidirectional STERLING BB chargers can charge in both directions. Provided that the voltage of the consumer battery is higher than 26.4V (27.0V for lithium) and the voltage of the starter battery is below 13V. In this case, the STERLING BB charger allows around half the current (~40A) to flow back to the starter battery, up to around 13.4V (float voltage). This ensures that the starter battery always remains charged if there is excess energy in the consumer battery. However, this function does NOT discharge your consumer battery - only the surplus is used. As soon as your generator/engine is switched on or you give the STERLING BB an ignition signal, the STERLING BB charger charges the consumer battery as before. The recharging function is activated by default, but can be deactivated if required.
The recharge function is ideal for keeping the starter battery charged at all times when you are recharging your consumer battery.
Insulation
The STERLING BB battery-to-battery chargers isolate the starter battery from the consumer battery. This protects the starter battery against accidental discharge and ensures that your engine is always ready to start.
Choosing the right STERLING BB charger
The bidirectional STERLING BB battery-to-battery charger should be rated at around 25-50% of the current output of your DC-DC converter. This will allow the converter to provide power to your mandatory loads (steering, lights, stereo, air conditioning, etc.) and direct excess power to your 12V starter battery. For example, if your converter has an output of 190A, you should use a STERLING BB1270 - this will provide around 60/70A for charging. If the entire converter is used by all the auxiliaries, the voltage in the 12V system will drop and the STERLING BB charger will naturally reduce the power during this time and eventually switch off when there is a high power demand. The STERLING BB will switch on again as soon as the voltage rises again.
Lithium compatible
Charging lithium batteries will probably exceed the charging capacity. If your converter has an output of 200A, but your lithium battery can only handle up to 100A, the converter will try to provide 200A, but the battery's BMS will trip and protect the battery from overload. The advantage of the STERLING BB charger is that it limits the current directly.
Always the right charging voltage
You receive the correct charging voltages at the auxiliary battery. Some DC-DC converters deliver a constant charging voltage of 14.7V, which may be too high for some battery types! With the bidirectional STERLING BB battery to battery charger, you always have the correct charging voltage, regardless of whether you are using a lead-acid, AGM or lithium battery.
Automatic start of the charging process
As soon as the STERLING BB charger is switched on via the ignition cable, it starts charging. Alternatively, the integrated vibration sensor can also activate the charging function after two consecutive vibration events. The vibration function makes it possible to install the STERLING BB charger without having to install an ignition signal cable. This operating mode is also suitable if you are using an intelligent generator/Euro 6 engine (or newer). Please follow the instructions regarding the vibration mode in the operating instructions.
